Marvel Imposes Affirmative Action Avengers on Free Comic Book Day

(PCM) There is something going on at Marvel, and it’s all about the money. While it may appear the Disneyfication of Marvel has hit a higher gear by flipping superhero genders, races and sexuality, Disney isn’t behind the latest change. Money is behind it.

No one can argue that over the past few years the political correctness of comic books has become a hot topic with hard core comic book readers who are being looked over to appeal to the next generation of comic book readers. Yet if you think Marvel  is making changes simply because they want to appease the needs of a minority of readers, you are wrong to think that. Marvel isn’t that naive. Sure hiring writers that fit that agenda (Mark Waid, Mahmud Asrar and Laura Martin) help, but the bottom line is always money.

The latest change however is more in your face that ever.

Look at this upcoming issue of the Avengers. What do you see?

avengers-diversified

Depending on who you are you could be celebrating or rolling your eyes or somewhere in between. Of course many long time readers will hit Tumblr, 3Chan and reddit, shouting “Marvel imposes affirmative action avengers.” The opposing argument will accuse bigotry throwing words like “inclusive” and “diversity” back in response. It will be a fun ride for Marvel as they try to steal the spotlight of an issue brought about from smaller publishers like Boom Studios Push Comics Forward initiative.

What? You don’t see it? Then let’s clear it up. Marvel even spells it out for you in the title, “All-New” and “All-Different”.

To put it bluntly there is a female Thor, a Muslim Ms. Marvel, and a bi-racial Spider-Man and black Captain America (Sam Wilson previously Falcon) as part of the new crew. Yes there is still Iron Man, Vision, and  Nova (Sam Alexander).

Does it matter if Marvel imposes affirmative action Avengers? No and yes. It doesn’t matter because the Avenger’s constantly change. And those changes often include female super heroes from Spider-Woman to She-Hulk. The Avengers has included minorities and diversity for many years. Again, changes are to be expected and that is the argument as to why it doesn’t matter.

Yet it does matter because the editors and writers at Marvel do in fact have an agenda designed to provoke. They may appear to be catering to the highly charged politically correct atmosphere of present day. And while this change may thrill and appease the social justice warriors on Tumblr that are just as much a bully as any playground or lunch money antagonist, Marvel isn’t out to appease Tumblr’s social justice warriors.

The fact is Marvel’s elite want controversy in order to increase sales and they know by creating a super hero affirmative action program, they can appear to have taken the high ground while everyone argues the point. All the while, sales go up.

Don’t be fooled by Marvel, they don’t care if you like or dislike the changes in the Avengers. They want the title to sell.  How can this assertion be proven?

Just look at the characters. Some changes have proven smart business moves. Thor’s sales a have doubled and only begun to fall slightly since the title changed to a female in October. Other changes such as Ultimate Spider-Man Miles Morales have not eclipsed the original character’s title, Miles has not broken the top 50 in sales. Neither has Ms. Marvel,  Kamala Khan, the 16 year old Pakistani (American) Muslim, written by a female Muslim (G Willow Wilson) with declining sales. Captain America is more of the same.

There is no question why Marvel is making a sweeping change to the Avengers. The controversy should earn them money. Combining an “All-Different” crew of Avengers is a hip way to code word, “diversified” which begs controversy.

The question lost to most comic book faithful, or legacy readers is why take beloved characters and change their gender, race, or sexuality?  Why not just create new characters with the gender, race or sexuality newer readers call for?  Again, that argument is being drowned out by accusations of bigotry while the answer is right before everyone’s eyes. Marvel’s motivation is increased sales. So don’t get your feelings hurt by the changes. You always have back issues that may just become more valuable for you the comic book reader. Everyone can be a winner. In fact, FREE comic book day is always the first Saturday every May. You can pick up this first group appearance on free comic book day.

Chris Hemsworth is People’s Sexiest Man Alive 2014

ChrisHemsworth(PCM) Every year, People magazine names a man and a woman who they respectively deem the Sexiest Man/Woman Alive, and for 2014, the Sexiest Man Alive is Thor lead, Chris Hemsworth.

Hemsworth is in pretty good (and good-looking) company; also making an appearance on People’s Sexiest Man Alive list are Guardians of Galaxy‘s Chris Pratt, Fifty Shades of Grey‘s Jamie Dornan, Michael Strahan, and Matt Bomer.

In 2013, Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine made it on the cover of People’s Sexiest Man Alive issue, and the year before that Channing Tatum was crowned with the title.

Making a new for himself in his homeland of Australia for his role as Kim Hyde on the soap series, Home and Away, Chris Hemsworth has found steadfast fans in America after playing Thor in Marvel’s Thor and The Avengers.

Back in 2013, Chris Hemsworth ranked number 7 on Glamour magazine’s 2013 list of “50 Sexiest Men,” coming in 3 places behind his younger brother, Liam Hemsworth.

Now, the actor jokes about his status as “Sexiest Man Alive,” telling People magazine, “I think you’ve bought me a couple of weeks of bragging rights around the house, I can just say to [wife Elsa Pataky], ‘Now remember, this is what the people think, so I don’t need to do the dishes anymore, I don’t need to change nappies. I’m above that. I’ve made it now.’ ”

I think we can all agree that Chris Hemsworth has “made it;” Marvel’s Thor, The Avengers, and Thor: The Dark World, all were huge box office hits and grossed over $2.6 billion worldwide.

Hemsworth is currently filming John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein’s National Lampoon’s Vacation reboot, Vacation, also starring Leslie Mann, Charlie Day, Christina Applegate, and Chevy Chase, and is in pre-production for Frank Darabont’s The Huntsman.

Hemsworth will also star in Michael Mann’s action-drama Blackhat, in theaters January 16, 2015, Ron Howard’s action-adventure In the Heart of the Sea, set to open March 13, 2015, Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, in theaters May 1, 2015, and Thor: Ragnarok, in theaters July 28, 2017.

It’s also of note that Chris Hemsworth has been rumored to star in DC Entertainment’s Doc Savage, written and directed by Shane Black (Iron Man 3, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) along with co-writers Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry.

New Avengers: Age of Ultron Clip!

AVENGERSageofultron(PCM) It’s only Wednesday and it’s already been a big week for Marvel; hot on the heels of Marvel’s exciting announcement for five new films, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Infinity Wars Parts I and II, and Inhumans, the studio gave fans a new clip from Avengers: Age of Ultron after Tuesday night’s episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC.

The new clip starts out lighthearted with the Avengers all having an unsuccessful go at picking up Thor’s mighty hammer. Thor jokes that they are all unworthy right before a battered Ultron crashes the party and drastically changes the mood.

Originally, the newest Avengers: Age of Ultron official trailer was scheduled to air after Tuesday’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but Marvel quickly replaced the official trailer with this new clip after they were forced to prematurely release the official trailer when a poor quality version was leaked online.

What Is Marvel’s Civil War Movie About?

civil-war-marvel(PCM) In a slew of announcements that effectively obliterate Warner Bros./DC recent movie release schedule announcement, Marvel has continued to do everything right in its cinematic universe.

In this article we’ll cover Civil War. What is Civil War?

Let’s get the news details behind us first. Civil War will be the next Captain America film which Robert Downey Jr. recently revealed ahead of the Marvel press release October 28th 2014. That film will hit theaters May 6, 2016.

Now for the back story of Civil War. And it is one that changed the Marvel Universe in a big way. For this reason, doing a film will serve as a good shake up to Marvel Studios current superhero line-up. Be prepared for some serious changes.

Civil War will introduce many many new Marvel characters that will sensibly fill the places left open from current actors and actresses leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe if for no other reason than their contracts are up and either can’t or won’t be renegotiated.  Marvel made it clear in their October 28, 2014 press release we will get new films from new characters which will include Ms. Marvel and Black Panther. In Civil War, Chadwick Boseman will play Black Panther.

Black Panther is a black character who is based out of secretive African nation known as Wakanda. It is home to some of the most advanced tech known to man. It’s also home to the most rare ore, vibranium.

Also announced was Captain Marvel to be released as a stand alone film on July 6, 2018, yet the actress to portray Ms. Marvel has not yet been determined.

Where did Civil War come from?

In 2006/2007 Marvel execs wanted to return to the tried and true method of having superheroes battle each other. It’s a simple premise, but Marvel needed a relevant reason for modern superheroes like Captain America and teammate Ironman to fight.

The politics of civil liberties was a hot issue in US culture and it made good sense to center a story around that issue which divided every character in the Marvel universe. Keep in mind, we are talking print and most people that love comic book super heroes don’t read the books, they watch movies.

Yet the success Marvel is experiencing on film is largely if not wholly due to drawing the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) from what comic book faithful refer to as ‘canon’. The original print stories.

Civil War should involve many many superheroes but what may make Civil War not so enjoyable to fan faithful is that it most likely will be a largely hollow story due to being unable to include many many superheroes and super villians.

In fact, it’s fair to say that Civil War is a film that is not yet ready to be made as more Marvel characters through other films should have been established first.

Marvel Civil War with Spider-Man

Marvel Civil War with Spider-Man

Civil War was a 7 part story that not only divided superheroes, it divided villains. Yet of the superheroes that chose sides, many were from the same teams. The Avengers were fragmented, as were the Fantastic Four.  Note that while Civil War had a primary story that was 7 issues, every character had a cross over into the story making it an impossibly hard read if you wanted to follow the story through each character’s own title.

Spider-Man was at the absolute center of it all. The story had a huge foundational element that superheroes must register with the government, and for Spider-Man to register it meant unmasking. We could parse the subject and say that in theory he never had to unmask, as according to the story he only needed to register with the government, not reveal his secret identity publically. But that doesn’t make for a great story does it?

In the end, this means that with current rampant rumors that Sony and Disney are in serious discussions of having Spider-Man guest in a Marvel Studios film, it is highly likely Spider-Man will be in Civil War. That is if the story wants to stick to canon.

And as mentioned earlier, canon is why Marvel is making great films and all the films to date, play so well together. They do so because these great stories have already succeeded with readers.

For more on the back story of Civil War read the recent article: Spider-Man in Marvel Movie? Civil War!

In the meantime it will be interesting to see if Marvel unveils additional films with more characters especially Spider-Man.  If not, Civil War may be Marvel’s first failed attempt.
