(PCM) Matt Wolf’s latest documentary Teenage delves into the origins of teenage-hood and offers a unique perspective of how growing up in the ’40′s and ’50′s shaped America’s future.
Once, ‘Teenagers’ didn’t exist. But then, they were invented. With a changing tide the world over and a struggle erupting between adults and youth, the concept of a new generation took shape.
Whether in America, England, or Germany, whether party-crazed Flappers or hip Swing Kids, zealous Nazi Youth or frenzied Sub-Debs, it didn’t matter – they were all a new idea of youth. They were all ‘Teenagers.’
A hypnotic rumination on the genesis of youth culture from the end of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th, Teenage is a living collage of rare archival material, filmed portraits, and diary entries read by Jena Malone, Ben Whishaw, and others.
Set to a a shimmering contemporary score by Bradford Cox (Deerhunter / Atlas Sound), Teenage is a mesmerizing trip into the past and a riveting look at the very idea of “coming-of-age.”
Narrating the documentary are Jena Malone (Sucker Punch), Ben Whishaw (Skyfall), Jessie Usher (Beautiful Boy), and Julia Hummer (The State I am In). Appearing in the film are Alden Ehrenreich (Beautiful Creatures) and Ben Rosenfield (James Boy).
The documentary already has a fresh rating of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Teenage has a run time of 1 hour and 18 minutes and will open in theaters on March 14th. Check out the official website here and watch a trailer for the documentary below!
