(PCM) Comic book icon Riverdale’s Archie Andrews will be killed off in an upcoming issue of “Life With Archie” set for release on July 16th.
Archie Comics CEO John Goldwater revealed that Archie will die a violent, but ultimately incredibly heroic death in the series. He also claims that Archie death will result in an “emotional, impactful and classic story that I know will survive the test of time.”
The “Life With Archie” comic series follows Archie and his gang of friends in Riverdale as they navigate through their adult lives. For half of each comic book Archie is married and settled down with Veronica and the other half of the comic features what his life would be like if he had settled down with Betty instead. Archie will die in both versions of the comic and the upcoming issue will be the last for that particular series.
Goldwater says the commemorative final two issues will “Not only show how Archie’s life ends, but also what he means to the world around him. We want to celebrate his life. After the events of “Life With Archie” #36, fans will leap forward a year to see the aftermath, and how his friends have moved on since his surprising death.
What’s Jughead doing? How are Betty and Veronica dealing with the loss? It’s not about the attention-grab of the death but about telling a great, evocative story that reminds people why this character is important to the fabric of pop culture — and showing how heroic a normal guy like Archie can be, and how important it is to realize that.”
Despite the fact that Archie’s life will abruptly and violently (if the cover image is any indication) end during his adult life, there will still be stories created about his teenage years.
Archie’s death will be the result of saving the life of a friend and it will happen in the same selfless way that Archie has always behaved. While it will definitely be emotional it is an event that creators feel was the only natural conclusion to Archie’s story.
