(PCM) It has been twenty years ago today since legendary rock artist Kurt Cobain of Nirvana took his own life in a move that sent a shock wave through the realm of rock n’ roll.
We are always left to wonder what he would be doing or how he would feel about the state of music, especially rock as it is today. Cobain’s influence on rock music and the grunge scene will always live on and the music of Nirvana has without a doubt created a legacy that will continue well into the future.
The music of Nirvana was the defining part of a generation and their songs continue to resonate with listeners to this very day. Songs such as “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Come As You Are”, “All Apologies”, and “Heart-Shaped Box” are timeless and without fail every time they come across the airwaves we feel a need to crank up the volume and escape, even if only for a few moments, to different place and time.
Much the same as when John Lennon was tragically murdered back in 1980, majority of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana fans can tell you exactly what they were doing the moment the news broke that Cobain had taken his own life. We may never truly understand why, but we do know that his memory will live on forever through the music he and Nirvana created.
Almost just in time for the 20th anniversary of Cobain’s death, the police department have revealed the first photos that show Cobain’s dead body, as well as, a series of other photos that show a heroin kit and other drug paraphernalia near his body. They were hard to stomach and I think I realized that I didn’t want or need to see them! I would much rather remember Cobain for the glorious art he has left us with and not some grainy crime scene photo. To use a quote from Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic made at one of Cobain’s public memorials “just catch the groove and let it flow out of your heart. That’s the level Kurt spoke to us on: in our hearts, and that’s where he, and the music, will always be, forever.”
