While Sanchez is absolutely stunning, it was not her looks that had people talking during Sunday nights competition, but instead her answer to a question posed by judge Rumor Willis about the high rate of sexual assaults on college campuses.

Sanchez said that women need to take it upon themselves to learn how to defend themselves as a way to battle the problem of campus rape and bringing awareness to the issue in extremely important.

After the competition Sanchez went to to tell reporters that as a young girl she once lived in a women’s shelter with her mother and at age 8 began to study taekwando as a way to protect her self and assist with building self-confidence.

As an adult she continues to volunteer at women’s shelters and teaches residents how to defend themselves and children about the concept of “Stranger Danger”. She is hoping to take her passion and knowledge of martial arts to the masses during her reign as Miss USA.

For Sanchez, the win was truly a dream come true!
