(PCM) I could hardly believe that after Thursday and Friday’s epic performance there were still two more days lined-up for Firefly Music Festival. As I made my way into the festival around noon on Saturday, I was greeted by sounds of “Here Comes The Sun” by The Beatles blasting through the speakers of the Lawn Stage, the same thing occurred on Sunday around noon as well.
I felt that it was a warm and lovely way to greet festival goers as they were making their way into the festival grounds each day…almost like a little good afternoon hug of a song!
All mushiness aside, I was able to check out some awesome performances on Saturday afternoon and evening from artists such as Bad Things, Twenty One Pilots, Unlikely Candidates, Third Eye Blind, The Wild Feathers, Grouplove, Cage The Elephant, Walk Off The Earth, Imagine Dragons, Johnnyswim, Beck, Outkast, Pretty Lights and X Ambassadors.
With so many great artists on the bill for Saturday it was such a challenge to try to make it to all the performances, but I did my very best and it was certainly a wonderful day for music that lasted well into the early morning hours. My crew and I were staying at a friends home about a mile or two away from the festival and we could still hear the thumping rhythms of both Pretty Lights and X Ambassadors once we had left the festival grounds.
Once all the other stages had quieted down for the evening the spotlight was on Saturday night headliners Outkast and I found myself completely and totally engrossed in the sea of over 80,000 fans who flocked to the main stage to witness the magic that Outkast brought to the stage.
If I could not have dreamed for a better set list from Outkast! Launching right out of the gate with “B.O.B” straight into “Gasoline”, “Aquamini” and “Rosa Parks” the duo consisting of rappers Andre 3000 and Big Boi held the audience completely captivated. Andre 3000′s platinum white wig and “Children of the Cornbread” jumpsuit was a trip and the pair truly appeared to be having a great time interacting on the stage and joking around with one another like old friends.
Earlier in the afternoon two of my favorite performances came Unlikely Candidates and Twenty One Pilots who certainly know how to put on a fantastic stage show. I could not believe how many people were in attendance to check out Twenty One Pilots despite their early afternoon set time. Later on, without a doubt Cage The Elephant went above and beyond engaging with the crowd and making sure “everyone throughout the festival was going to hear their performance”.
My only small complaint was putting Walk Off The Earth and Cage The Elephant on stage at the same time. I know that Walk Off The Earth did another performance at the Coffee House stage at a different time, however with the rest of the days packed schedule I felt like I was running back and forth to be sure I at least caught a good amount of each bands set.
After Cage The Elephant it was wonderful to see Imagine Dragons make their triumphant return to the Firefly stage. Playing the festival in its’ inaugural year on one of the smallest stages with an 11:30 am time slot, it was truly magical to see the way that this band has truly blown up and now they are gracing the festivals largest stage in the early evening hours to an enormous crowd of eager fans.
Imagine Dragons played an incredible set that included a covers of Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” and the band’s new song “Battle Cry” was performed live for the very first time. To close out their set Imagine Dragons were joined on the stage by Cage The Elephant to perform their hit song “Radioactive”.
Beck was another artist that I got to witness live for the first time at Firefly and I was absolutely blown away. Looking incredibly dapper, Beck plowed though his set that opened up with “Devil’s Haircut” and “Loser” among other tracks. The best was his amazing cover of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” that had the entire crowd going absolutely wild.
After the incredible performances on Saturday, I think we were all in need of a little bit of slowing down and that is exactly the kind of vibe that Sunday, Firefly’s final day, provided.
We were able to catch performances from Dan Croll, Vance Joy, Nonono, Kawehi, Weezer, Ziggy Marley, The Lumineers, Phantogram, Jack Johnson and Childish Gambino to round out yet another amazing year at Firefly Festival 2014!
