(PCM) The news has been revealed actor Tom Hiddleston will play iconic country music legend Hank Williams in the upcoming biopic “I Saw The Light”.
Hiddleston is most well-known for his role as Loki in “The Avengers” and is certainly a surprising choice for the role of an American country music icon. According to Deadline.com, Hiddleston will not only master Williams’ Alabama accent, but will also master his music as well.
The producers for the film have already secured to rights to many songs in Hank Williams’ extensive music catalog including “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry”.
“I Saw The Light” is based upon the 1994 book title “Hank Williams: The Biography” by Colin Escott, George Merritt and William MacEwen and film director Marc Abraham adapted the screenplay for the story himself. The film is set to start shooting in Louisiana this October.
The casting news was revealed on Thursday evening when Hiddleston posted an image on his Twitter account dressed up in cowboy boots, cowboy hat and an acoustic guitar.

The casting news has been met with both praise and criticism with many people not sure about a British actor taking on the role of an American country legend. Hiddleston has expanding his acting chops over the last few years and besides the role of Loki been in films such as “Only Lovers Left Alive” and Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris”.
Williams died at the very early age of 29 in 1953 after a battle with both drug and alcohol abuse. To this day, Williams is looked at as one of the most cherished and beloved country music artists and certainly did his part to put country music on the map.
