(PCM) It’s time for the weekly foot in mouth celebrity focus. It seems every week a celebrity steps into politically incorrect territory with 2014 being the year of the racist remark.
Thursday July 3rd the long time co-host of Opie and Anthony, Anthony Cumia was fired for racist tweets the night before.
But was he fired by his employer Sirius (radio) for racist tweets or was he fired for being violent and threatening?
Political correctness overshadows common sense and reasoning, could that be the case in the firing of Anthony Cumia? Upon inspection of the situation in context, it seems Cumia was more threatening than he was racist in his remarks. Read that carefully, it states ‘more than’. This is in no way a claim that he was not racist in his tweets. He was. The odd thing about the blow-up is that the media is focused on the racism and not the actual threats made.
Has our media become no more than a dog looking for a fight? We all hear about how the media builds you up to tear you down so they can build you back up again. Is our society so shallow that we can identify real social issues? These are just questions for you to decide.
Here is the background of Anthony’s offense.
In a recent visit in Manhattan New York’s Time’s Square, Anthony Cumia did what most people do, took pictures. A woman took exception to this and according to Cumia, she hit him. This is alleged, there is no proof of the incident. Although Cumia posted photos through Twitter later identifying his alleged assailant.
Cumia claims that the woman reacted to her being included in a photo by punching Cumia in the face. Cumia argued with her. In her defense or offense, (you decide) – and once again according to Cumia “Then she punched me 5 more times. She’s lucky I was a white legal gun owner or she’d be dead. Then 5 blacks started giving me shit!”
Anthony’s tweets raged through the evening. By morning he had done undeniable damage to his reputation and in the eyes of his employer, theirs too.
It’s clear that Cumia was trying to win favor by accusing this alleged attacker of violence to which he Tweeted: “The switch to violence is immediate. No discussion, just violence. When will THAT be addressed? Oh, right, never. Slavery did it? “
Yet once again a celebrity ventures into racism and threats without realizing if they too commit racist remarks or threatening remarks they in turn lose victimhood and become the aggressor.
