Diabetic Teen And His Family Kicked Out Of A Drive-In For Bringing In Candy

(PCM) We all know that most movie theaters have a policy that does not allow outside food or drinks to be brought into their establishments, however shouldn’t individuals with certain health conditions be given an exception?

Recently, 16-year old diabetic Brad Weidner and his family were visiting the Delsea Drive-In in Vineland, NJ and were kicked out of the establishment because Brad had a backpack on him that contained some juice and candy.

Brad suffers from Type-1 diabetes and carries a backpack with him at all times that contains insulin, an Epi-pen, a juice box and some candy that he can eat in case his blood sugar were to drop suddenly.

The management at the Delsea Drive-In refused to accept this as an excuse and upheld their policy of no outside food or drink and asked the family to leave. The Weidner family, especially Brad, claim that they are incredibly humiliated by the incident and say that Brad needs those items to ensure his safety. He also suffers from celiac and food allergies. The items they were attempting to bring in the drive-in were not extra items to eat, but only items to be sure that Brad’s health and well-being was not at risk.

What makes this story even more surprising is that the owner of the Delsea Drive-in happens to be a pediatrician named Dr. John Deleonardis. One would think that a pediatrician, above anyone would understand Brad’s condition and the family’s concern for his well-being.

In this case, not so much!  Deleonardis said “Sorry, your kid has an affliction, but what can I tell you? No food. No drink. Bottom line.”  Deleonardis goes on to claim that his drive-in snack bar offers diabetic and celiac friendly food options and the food sales are what keeps his venue up and running.  Well, with that kind of attitude something tells us that he will not be in business for long!
