(PCM) The origin story behind the man that inspired one of horror’s most iconic villains unfolds in Universal Pictures’ Dracula Untold, opening in 2D and IMAX theaters nationwide October 17, 2014.
Luke Evans stars as Vlad Tepes, aka Vlad Dracula, better known as the Romanian ruler history dubbed ‘Vlad the Impaler’ for his practice of impaling the heads and bodies of his enemies.
Earning his name from his father, Vlad II Dracul, Vlad Dracula means “Son of the Dragon.”
Cited as the inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, Vlad Tepes was a three-time Voivode of Wallachia (Prince of Wallachia) and member of the House of Draculesti as well as a member of the Order of the Dragon, a 15th Century order established to protect Christianity in Eastern Europe.
Vlad earned the nickname of Tepes (Impaler) posthumously due to his favorite form of cruel punishment which he purportedly carried out on an estimated 40,000 to 100,000.
While I hope you learned a little something from that history lesson, Dracula Untold tells a completely different story of Vlad Tepes. Instead of a smart and sadistic ruler who found pleasure in impaling people, Luke Evan’s Vlad Tepes is the original Dracula, willingly becoming a vampire in order to save his family.
Starring alongside Luke Evans (Fast and Furious 6, Immortals) are Sarah Gadon (Enemy, A Dangerous Method), Dominic Cooper (Captain America: The First Avenger, Need for Speed), and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, Gosford Park).
Dracula Untold is director Gary Shores first full-length feature film; he has previously directed high-end commercials and garnered a lot of attention in Hollywood for a trailer he directed for a faux film, The Cups of Tears, which you can watch here.
