(PCM) A 78 year old woman from Florida was travelling on an international trip to the Philippines with her daughter when she was caught at Detroit Metropolitan Airport with nearly $41,000 in cash hidden in her girdle, bra and carry-on bag.
Federal law declares that travelers much declare if they are carrying more than $10,000 in cash. The woman initially claimed that she was only carrying $200 in cash and then later filled out a form declaring that she had $1,200 which is what ultimately prompted Custom and Borders Protection officers to question her.
When searched the officers discovered $8,000 in wallet in her carry-on bag, $4,000 sewn into a cloth pouch and almost $1,000 in envelopes. She finally admitted to officers that there was $3,000 in her blouse and another $2,000 sewn into her bra strap. As the officers continued to search the woman, they also discovered nearly $21,000 in her girdle. We are guessing she just forgot to mention that!
The woman claims that she had just received $120,000 from selling her home and had already wired some money to the Philippines, but felt safer to carry the rest of the cash with her at the time.
While the woman hasn’t been officially charged, however the government in the forfeiture complaint is requesting to keep the money. The Associated Press attempted to make contact with the woman, but there was no answer at her listed Florida phone number.
