New App Offers Female Taxi Drivers For Female Passengers In NYC

(PCM) Everyone who has ever traveled to New York City knows that there are a plethora of choices when it comes to transportation, however in addition to those famous yellow, black and green taxi cabs, there will be a special service offered only to women.

Beginning on September 16th, women in NYC will be able to specifically request a female driver through the new app and livery service called: SheTaxi—-SheRides. The service will be available in NYC, Westchester County and Long Island.

The service will take requests for rides through the app and then dispatch female drivers sporting hot pink pashmina scarves. It is called SheTaxi—-SheRides in NYC because regulations prohibit the use of the word taxi in a company’s name.

The over all purpose behind the new service is to assist women who may feel uncomfortable being driven by men or who would prefer the company of other women instead. The app will ask those requesting if there is a woman in their travelling party, if there is not then they will be directed to other taxi car service providers.

Currently the app will only be available through Apple, however there are plans to roll it out for Android devices very soon. Also, while the service is currently limited to New York right now, there are also plans to expand to other cities including Chicago and Miami.

According to New York city data ,of New York City’s 59,999 for-hire drivers of livery cars, green cabs, limousines and luxury sedans, only 2,952 of them, or 5 percent, are women. Even fewer women drive yellow cabs: 574 out of 51,874 drivers, or 1 percent.
