(PCM) CBS Films’ story of the power of the human spirit and the resilience of unity, Pride, opens in select theaters in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco on a limited run starting September 26, 2014.
Pride is inspired by an extraordinary true story.
It’s the summer of 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike, prompting a London-based group of gay and lesbian activists to raise money to support the strikers’ families.
Initially rebuffed by the Union, the group identifies a tiny mining village in Wales and sets off to make their donation in person.
As the strike drags on, the two groups discover that standing together makes for the strongest union of all.
Director Matthew Warchus, known for his only other full-length feature Simpatico (1999), won the Queer Palm at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival for Pride and is attached to the remake of Broadway musical, beloved Roald Dahl novel, and 1996 film, Matilda.
Pride stars Bill Nighy (Hot Fuzz), Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake), Dominic West (300), Paddy Considine (The Bourne Ultimatum), Andrew Scott (Locke), Joseph Gilgun (Emmerdale), George MacKay (Defiance), and Ben Schnetzer (The Book Thief).
Pride already has a certified fresh rating of 100% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes; Dave Calhoun of Time Out calls the film: “It’s a joyous film, full of love and warmth but unafraid to admit that with sticking out your neck comes struggle and sorrow.”
