William H. Macy Makes Directorial Debut with ‘Rudderless’

Rudderless_1(PCM) Academy Award-nominated actor/writer/producer William H. Macy makes his directorial debut with Rudderless, opening in theaters on a limited run October 17, 2014.

Billy Crudup plays Sam, a former high-profile advertising executive whose life is torn apart by the sudden death of his son.

Living off the grid on a docked sailboat, he wastes away his days while drowning his pain in alcohol.

When Sam discovers a box filled with his son’s demo tapes and lyrics, his own child’s musical talent is a revelation for him, a grieving father who felt he’d been absent from his son’s life.

Communing with his deceased son’s dashed dreams, Sam learns each song and eventually musters the will to perform one at a local bar.

When Quentin (Yelchin), a young musician in the audience, is captivated by the song, the unlikely duo forms a rock band that becomes surprisingly popular and revitalizes both of their lives.

Starring in Rudderless with Billy Crudup (Almost Famous, Princess Mononoke) and Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Fright Night) are Felicity Huffman (TV’s Desperate Housewives, Transamerica), Jamie Chung (Sucker Punch, The Hangover pt. II), Selena Gomez (Spring Breakers, Hotel Translyvania), Kate Micucci (Rio 2, When in Rome) and Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix, Mystic River).

Rudderless marks the first time William H. Macy has directed a feature length film. Macy, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 1997 for his performance in the Coen brothers’ Fargo, directed the 1988 TV movie Lip Service starring Griffin Dunne, Paul Dooley, and Jonathan Katz.

Rudderless is receiving positive praise so far; the film has a 7.2/10 on IMDb and a fresh score of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.
