(PCM) Inside one day of Warner Bros. announcing the DC Superhero movie schedule details of one of the more obscure titles emerges. The gritty director David Ayer will take the helm. But what is and who are the Suicide Squad?
Suicide Squad in DC’s print or comic book universe is a group of notable and not so well known incarcerated villains, many from the Batman family. It’s not so much as a second chance program as a no other choice operation where super vvillainsare used to execute top secret operations. Top Secret? The not so secret team operates undercover in the respect that if they are caught, the government will deny association. Of course their name sums up their tasks.
The New Suicide Squad Issue #1
The team is recruited from Belle Reve Penitentiary in the DC universe. It doesn’t reside in any one city but always referenced as outside of Gotham or Metropolis. The operations are managed by Dr. Amanda Waller. She hand picks the members.
The membership over several volumes has changed as the comic has been around since 1959, however it’s a safe bet the current suicide squad will follow the canon of The New 52 which is a reboot of the entire DC Universe that took place in 2011. The Suicide Squad as a print comic has been cancelled a few times – even cancelled in 2014 only to be restarted yet again.
The key roles most believe are must have characters in the Suicide Squad will be the Joker’s girlfriend, Harley Quinn and long time Batman villain Deadshot.
Rumors from The Hollywood Reporter are flying that Ryan Gosling and Tom Hardy are in the running for major roles with Wil Smith and Margot Robbie all having offers to to be in the movie.
What characters will appear? After all, there have been many members of the years. El Mayimbe is tweeting Amanda Waller is in, along with Deadshot, Harkness and Vixen.
Don’t expect some of the over-the-top characters such as King Shark or Bronze Tiger to make it into a DC Suicide Squad movie. However with a Justice League and members of the Justice League receiving their own movies, characters such as Captain Boomerang from Flash’s hometown of Central City and Count Vertigo from Star City, home to Green Lantern.
Past Suicide Squad Members
The political correctness demands for minorities and women would make Vixen a sure choice too. In fact Suicide Squad has a large bank of women to choose from including Poison Ivy. Others include, Nightshade, Ravan, Duchess, Jewelee and Enchantress.
For all the speculation perhaps the best bet is the current New 52 Suicide Squad:

- Joker’s Daughter (Not his actual daughter)
The entry of Joker’s Daughter would have a huge impact on that character in print as she isn’t currently making any real waves in readership. Speculators may be scooping up her first printings at the mere thought she’ll be in film.
The DC Suicide Squad movie will be in theaters August 5, 2016.
