(PCM) Variety reported on Monday that an animated My Little Pony movie is in the works at Hasbro Studios, set to be released in 2017.
Along with fellow 80’s tv hit series Jem and the Holograms, My Little Pony is one of the first films to be produced through Hasbro’s new Allspark Pictures label.
Producing and financing the film in-house, Hasbro Studios is taking control of My Little Pony and has plans to release the film “on the broadest possible number of screens,” said Stephen Davis, president of Hasbro Studios and global entertainment and licensing for Hasbro Inc.
“We will continue to make big tentpole movies with our studio partners, [i.e. Transformers and G.I. Joe with Paramount and Monopoly and Candy Land with Sony], but there is another set of movies where we feel we have an opportunity to have a bit more control over the budgeting, financing, calendarization, marketing and creative of our films. There are new economic models that fit certain films” says Davis.
Hasbro has already seen great success with their My Little Pony franchise; the studio just produced the 100th episode of the TV series that airs in over 180 countries worldwide and has released several straight-to-DVD homevideos.
The colorful ponies that teach the magic of friendship found a surprising cult audience in males aged 18-35 years in late 2010 and early 2011 when Hasbro launched the original tv series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic in coordination with their new toy line. This group has since taken on the moniker of “brony” or “bronies” for plural and have been met with some controversy and criticism as well as support.
