(PCM) Marvel is on a roll with Civil War. As the print universe rolls out graphic innuendo that the 2006 Civil War storyline will return to the forefront in 2015, Robert Downey Jr. drops a bomb of his own in regards to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Downey confirms he will reprise his role as Iron Man, but not in Iron Man 4. He will appear in Captain America 3. He’s been vocal in recent months about his willingness to done the Iron Man suit once again but under the right circumstances. It seems he has found those circumstances.
What were the circumstances Robert Downey was in need of? He was looking for more of a guest role with significant screen time. As an actor, more screen time meant more leverage for more money. A lot of money. Word has it Marvel executives were balking at this notion and wanted to write Iron Man out of any script in response. It appears those rumors were untrue.
While Captain America 3 is not being labeled a Prelude to Civil War, it is. For more on Civil War see my recent article: Marvel Returns To Civil War.
With Robert Downey Jr.’s contract reached with Iron Man 3 and Avenger’s 2, the future of Downey is one of a free agent.
For Captain America 3 Downey has successfully gained a 50 million dollar contract with backend revenue. This goes against Marvel’s past operating manual of reeling in labor cheap on long contracts. Downey is the first among the talent pool to complete his obligations after the continued growing success of the MCU franchise.
To date Marvel has planned out the lifespan of actors in roles. Chris Evans as Steve Rogers in the Captain America role will be next to end his contract. Evans has made it clear he is growing weary of the role. But that is okay as the manner in which Marvel has jumped to existing canon storylines, this may work out.
Fans of the comic book canon know that Captain America has on a number of occasions been embodied by other notable players. Perhaps most prominent in recent history is James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes whom most now know as the Winter Soldier.
If Marvel follows the tack of Civil War, they could use the demise of Captain Rogers as a jumping off point to replace him with Bucky Barnes. Please note the wording ‘demise’. There is no true spoiler in that statement. It’s a bit of a reveal but take comfort in knowing this word has many meanings.
In time, Chris may miss his role and return to it just as Steve Rogers has in the current Marvel Universe.
The ramifications of Marvel’s intention of a Civil War film is meaningful. One of the main characters is Spider-Man. There have been rumors in recent weeks that Sony is considering Spider-Man to guest star in a Marvel Studios film. If those rumors are true, Spider-Man will be appearing eventually in a Marvel Studios film. That is another article for another time. Be sure to check in soon.
