Spider-Man In a Marvel Movie? Civil War!

Marvel Civil War

(PCM) The summer of 2014 had many rumors. Each rumor came to be true with the third appearing to be every bit as much true!

  1. Robert Downey wanted to be Iron Man again but not in an Iron Man solo film.
  2. Deadpool may get his own film. In September it was announced Deadpool will be in theaters February 2016.
  3. Marvel was in talks with Sony to allow Spider-Man to guest appear in a Marvel Studios film.

Two of those three are true. The third and last has all the earmarks of being true. Here is why you should hold out hope that number three will in fact be revealed as true in due time.

Marvel Civil War

If you are true comic book enthusiast you understand certain stories have elements you can’t replace if you bring them to film.

Civil War is one such story. And as Robert Downey Jr. not only confirmed he would be in the Captain America 3 film (confirming rumor #1 above as fact), Downey has also let it escape that Captain America 3 will be a lead into Civil War.

What is Civil War? Yes it was a war between the states in U.S. history, but in the Marvel print universe it a story that took place in 2006.

Try this. Would you like to see Venom standing next to Iron Man ready to fight at his side? That’s just what happened in Marvel’s Civil War.

The premise was to create a plot line that would divide the Marvel Superheroes in half and have them fight. That was done to earn money – sell comics. The story itself used the political hot potato of the early 2000’s civil liberties issue.

In the Marvel Universe the civil liberties of superheroes was at the center of it. A super hero registration act had been enacted and while it divided Marvel’s superheroes down the middle, no character was more affected than the one and only, Spider-Man.

You could say Peter Parker aka Spider-Man was the center of the Civil War storyline.

Could any other character in Marvel’s current bank be used in place of Peter Parker for a Civil War film on the big screen?

Fox replaced Sue Storm and Kitty Pryde in Chris Claremont’s Days of Future Past in their blockbuster film of the same name using new fan favorite Wolverine as the protagonist. In short, some other superhero can take center stage for Spider-Man but wow… the Internet will go nuts over the notion that Spider-Man may and should be in the Civil War film.

If you are a comic book reader, you may be in the larger majority that Civil War was not a good story. It was a great concept but the story lagged and had a poor ending with an outcome that really negatively affected the Marvel Universe.

Civil War on film could go a number of different directions using the same concept of dividing the superheroes in a fight but it will need a lot of characters to pull it off. After all, in print ALL the Marvel superheroes AND villains were in on the act.

Civil War will obviously be missing a some major components on film. It will be missing all the X-men/mutants and the Fantastic Four due to those characters rights being currently assigned to Fox. Rumors that Sony has seen the light and realized the limits of Spider-Man need to be true as Marvel can’t afford to lose another major player in order to make Civil War work as a viable film event.

Civil War will be a brave undertaking, without Spider-Man, it will lose most all it’s promise. Some will argue Civil War should not be made into a film at all as it wasn’t well recieved by readers with the horrible ending and outcome to many characters – Spider-Man included. Some can even argue that without the X-Men and Fantastic Four it shouldn’t be made. The largest argument against it will be all the above plus not having Spider-Man. Without him, why bother?

Let’s hope that the secrets between Marvel and Sony are true, Spider-Man will be guest appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After all, wouldn’t you love to see Peter Parker in the Iron Spider-Man suit?
