The First Iranian Vampire Western: ‘A Girl Walks Alone at Night’

AGirlWalksAloneAtNight(PCM) Ana Lily Amirpour’s suspenseful romance-horror, A Girl Walks Alone at Night, has critics praising the debut director’s aesthetic and story, offering up a fresh take on a classic horror genre.

Shot in black and white, everything from the characters, the look, a modern soundtrack of persian rock and euro-pop make this a truly modern Iranian film. A mythical mash-up of genre and culture, it’s different than any Iranian film you’ve ever seen … the first Iranian Vampire Western.

A Girl Walks Alone at Night is a love story between two tortured souls in an Iranian Ghost town called Bad City… a place that reeks of death and loneliness where a lonesome vampire is preying on the towns most depraved denizens.

Starring Sheila Vand, Arash Marandi, and Marshall Manesh, A Girl Walks Alone at Night currently has a fresh rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics out of 8 reviews.

Guy Lodge of Variety praised the film writing, “Ana Lily Amirpour’s auspicious debut feature is a sly, slinky vampire romance set in an imaginary Iranian underworld” and Boyd Van Hoeij of The Hollywood Reporter echoed those sentiments in his review; “This moody and gorgeous film is finally more about atmosphere and emotions than narrative — and none the worse for it.”
