(PCM) Deadline has reported that Warner Bros. Pictures is working on rebooting their 2007 box office hit starring Will Smith, I Am Legend.
For fans of the movie, this might seem like another tease; for the past few years talks of a prequel and/or sequel to I Am Legend have been circulating the web.
There was even a fleshed out script by Academy Award winning screen writer Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind, I Am Legend) for both a prequel and sequel at one point, but nothing came to fruition.
Back in February, Goldsman dished out the details of the axed prequel and sequel in an interview with io9:
“Oh no no, [there was] never a movie. I mean, we wrote a prequel [and] a sequel. We had a really interesting prequel, which was the first outbreak of the virus, during a Thanksgiving Day parade, which was awesome.
“We did a really interesting prequel that [took place] later. Which was right after the first… really right when the population of of humans became pretty decimated. And it was this sort of trek to Washington. Which included a dark seeker elephant that had broken out of the zoo.
“Then we did a sequel, that started with Neville again — and you realized that he was cloned. We’ve tried every which way. In fact if you’re available you could be in the next movie. It will never happen but we really enjoyed trying to make it happen.”
According to Deadline, the reboot of the franchise will most likely come from a re-write of Gary Graham’s spec script, A Garden At the End of the World.
Will Smith, who is known for avoiding sequels, is not set to star in the reboot.
Akiva Goldsman, James Lassiter, Roy Lee, and Joby Harold are all set to produce the film.
Francis Lawrence directed 2007’s I Am Legend, based on the 1954 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson. The movie went on to gross over $585 million worldwide.
