(PCM) Gravitas Ventures recently acquired director Gillian Greene’s independent thriller/comedy Murder of a Cat, setting the film for a limited release in select theaters starting December 5, 2014.
Murder of a Cat marks Gillian Greene’s directorial debut. From the script by New Girl writers Robert Snow’s and Christian Magalhars’, which appeared in 2010’s Black List, Murder of a Cat stars Fran Kranz as Clinton Moisey, a man investigating the murder of his beloved pet cat.
Clinton Moisey is an iconoclastic, artisan action-figure designer who still lives in his mom’s basement, and is, by the standards of the world, a full-blown loser. But Clinton doesn’t have time to care about what others think of him; he is too busy running a yard sale where he promotes his hardboiled detective toy line with his pet cat and best friend, “Mouser.”
When Clinton wakes up one morning to find Mouser impaled by a crossbow arrow, he is devastated. Realizing that the local Sheriff is only interested in flirting with his mom, Clinton sets off on his own to find out who killed Mouser and why.
As Clinton delves deeper into the case, he encounters a free-spirited weed dealer and part-time hair stylist to the elderly, a squeaky-clean Korean store clerk with a dark side, and a local celebrity on the verge of a nervous breakdown, ultimately uncovering a town-wide conspiracy far greater than he ever imagined.
Murder of a Cat opened to mixed reviews after its premiere at 2014’s Tribeca Film Festival.
Peter DeBruge in his review for Variety and Frank Scheck in his review for the Hollywood Reporter call Clinton an “overbearing man-child” and an “overgrown man-child.”
Scheck goes on to express his full dislike for the film, writing, “Wasting the talents of such reliable veteran performers as Greg Kinnear, Blythe Danner and J.K.Simmons, Murder of a Cat is the sort of would-be satirical comedy that substitutes forced quirkiness for humor to relentlessly grating effect.”
On the other end of the spectrum, Lesley Coffin gave Murder of a Cat 4 out of 5 stars in her review for Filmoria calling the film “ridiculous fun,” saying, “directed by Gillian Greene (of the cult hit short Fanboy) and New Girl’s writers Christian Magalhaes and Robert Snow, the film is a brilliant parody of the classic mystery genre, with a star turn by Joss Whedon protegé Fran Kranz.”
Decide for yourself whether Gillian Greene’s directorial debut is a hilarious comedy or a complete misfire when it opens in select theaters nationwide as well as On Demand, on Amazon, and on iTunes in the U.S. and Canada starting December 5!
