(PCM) We are sure by now that many, if not all, of you have seen the award-winning film “American Hustle” and of course may recall the microwave scene that take place between actress Jennifer Lawrence and actor Bradley Cooper in the kitchen.
Well, it appears that brief scene has the potential to cost the studio some big bucks due to a recent lawsuit filed by a journalist whose name was referenced in the scene talking about the dangers of microwave use.
The journalist, Paul Brodeur, has filed a lawsuit against Atlas Entertainment, Annapurna Pictures and Columbia Pictures claiming libel, slander, defamation, and false light due to his name being referenced in the scene.
“American Hustle” is partially based on some true events that took place in the 1970’s and Paul Broduer was indeed a journalist who did happen to work in the 70’s and write about microwaves. He claims however that the statement used in the film which says his article states that microwave ovens take the nourishment out of food is untrue and he has since stated just the opposite. He goes on to say that he does not support that opinion at all and that the film has now ruined his reputation.
“American Hustle” grossed over $250 million worldwide and Brouder is seeking $1 million in damages, as well as, the removal of his name from the film. Thus far the studio has not responded to Broduer’s claim, however some believe that Broduer’s case is not without merit, as they do name him by name and reference something he does cover.
The film company may have a legal loophole, as they claim in the opening credits that “some of this actually happened”, not all and of course everyone knows that the character played by Lawrence in the film can not necessarily be looked at as an accurate information source.
