(PCM) After much speculation, Marvel Studios has confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch of Sherlock and Star Trek Into Darkness will star in the studio’s live action Doctor Strange adaption, slated to open in 3D and 2D theaters nationwide November 4, 2016.
Created by Steve Ditko and debuting in the Marvel comic book Strange Tales #110 in 1963, Doctor Strange is the Supreme Sorcerer of Earth, a powerful sorcerer with protecting the earth from mystical threats being his top priority.
Marvel Studios announced on Thursday that the titular role would be played by Benedict Cumberbatch. “Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” explains producer Kevin Feige. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”
Dr. Stephen Strange was a highly talented and wealthy neurosurgeon whose guilt-ridden past resulted in his cold and egotistical personality, until a tragic accident robs him of his ability to perform surgery.
Turning to a powerful sorcerer known as the Ancient One, a millennia-old sorcerer who protected the Earth dimension as its Sorcerer Supreme, Strange gets a new lease on life and vows to learn the art of sorcery to defeat Karl Mordo, an evil ex-pupil of the Ancient One’s.
Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) helms the Marvel Studios’ Phase Three film, written by John Spaihts (The Darkest Hour, Prometheus) and writing team Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (Sahara, Conan the Barbarian).
Benedict Cumberbatch, receiving a fair amount of Oscar-buzz for his performance as Alan Turner in The Imitation Game, is also starring in Warner Bros. 2016 Jungle Book: Origins as Shere Khan, Gary Oldman’s 2016 drama Flying Horse, Scott Cooper’s 2015 action-drama Black Mass, and David Lowery’s The Yellow Birds, a war drama with an unknown release date.
