(PCM) You know that feeling you get on the back of your neck when you feel like you’re being watched? Or when the hairs on your arms raise at the sound of heavy footsteps behind you?
Dubbed as “the most striking American horror film in years,” David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows plays on the paranoid fear of being followed, but not in your conventional stalked-by-a-serial-killer kind of way.
Written and directed by David Robert Mitchell (The Myth of the American Sleepover), It Follows tells the story of a teenager who finds herself plagued by disturbing visions and the inescapable sense that something is following her after a strange sexual encounter with her boyfriend.
For 19-year-old Jay, the fall should be about school, boys and weekends at the lake. Yet, after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter she suddenly finds herself tormented by nightmarish visions; she can’t shake the sensation that someone, or something, is following her. As the threat closes in, Jay and her friends must somehow escape the horrors that are only a few steps behind.
It Follows has received high praises from critics since debuting at the Cannes Film Festival in France in May of 2014, winning Best Film and Best Screenplay at the Austin Fantastic Film Fest and the Denis-de-Rougemont Youth Award and the Jury Award at the Neuchâtel International Fantasy Film Festival.
The horror film currently has a strong rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter wrote that It Follows’ “canny manipulation of tone, atmosphere and tension makes this a satisfying little horror movie” and Chris Bumbray of JoBlo’s Movie Emporium simply stated that It Follows is: “Truly unsettling. One of the best horror movies to come along in a while.”
Screening in the U.S. at the Sundance Film Festival on January 23, 2015, It Follows opens in France on February 27, 2015. If you can’t make it to Sundance or France though, don’t despair; It Follows will be available in the U.S. on demand starting March 27, 2015.
It Follows stars Maika Monroe (The Bling Ring, Labor Day), Keir Gilchrist (It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Dead Silence), Daniel Zovatto (Beneath, Laggies), Jake Weary (Altitude, Fred: The Movie), Olivia Luccardi (Sailor Moon the Movie, Bleeding), and Lili Sepe (Spork, Izzy & the Angel).
