(PCM) The news has sadly been confirmed that singer Joe Cocker has passed away at the age of 70. According to his agent Barrie Marshall, Cocker has died after battling an undisclosed illness. It has been speculated that he was undergoing treatment for lung cancer.
Cocker’s music career spans for over forty plus years with hits that include “You Are So Beautiful” and “Up Where We Belong”. He recognized mainstream success with his memorable rendition of the classic Beatles song “With A Little Help From My Friends” which skyrocketed to number one on the charts.
“Up Where We Belong” his duet with Jennifer Warnes was featured in the film “An Officer and A Gentleman” also hit number one and earned Cocker and Warnes both a Grammy and an Academy Award.
Cocker’s agent also went on to say in a statement that Cocker was “simply unique” and “it will be impossible to fill the space he leaves in our hearts”.
We had the chance to see Cocker perform live a few years back during MusiqFest in Bethlehem, PA and were absolutely blown away with this man’s incredible stage presence, so we could not agree more with his agent saying “he was without a doubt the greatest rock/soul singer to come out Britain” and that “anyone who ever saw him live would never forget him”.
Our sincere condolences go out to Joe Cocker’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
