Sleeping With Sirens are just over a month away from releasing their forthcoming fifth full-length album, Gossip (via Warner Bros) which already has two rock anthem singles released “Empire To Ashes” and “Legends” which will be used as Team USA’s official anthem (theme song) for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, which is quite the honor. Gossip will be the followup album to their fourth studio album MADNESS which was released back in 2015 (via Epitaph Records). Sleeping with Sirens will be busy this fall/winter playing various festivals, releasing their new album Gossip on September 22nd, and touring on a very intimate tour in support of their album release. We had the opportunity to catch up with Sleeping with Sirens frontman Kellin Quinn recently where we chatted briefly about the forthcoming album, upcoming tour, and his most meaningful songs on the record. Check out what Quinn had to say below.
Hey Kellin, thanks for taking the time to sit down and chat with us today. Let’s start off by chatting about the new music Sleeping With Sirens has coming out on September 22nd via Warner Brothers Records. Where did the title for this record come about, why the name GOSSIP?
- I figured this was going to be an album people would talk about, so the name Gossip just made sense for it.
Could you detail the overall writing, recording and production process of this new record coming out and how it differs from previous releases?
- I think that this album is special because we all sat in a room and made the decision to not worry about outside opinions and to just write the album that we wanted without the fear of what anyone may think of it! There’s something super freeing about that.
You released the debut single “Legends” from GOSSIP back on July 13th, which is now TEAM USA’s Theme Song in the Olympics. How did that come about for the band and how does it feel to have such a large organization reach out to use your music?
- It was a surprise to say the least.. we’re honored and couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity! “We feel very legendary” that was a dad joke.
Out of the 11 tracks on the new album GOSSIP, which 2 hold the most meaning to you and what are they about?
- “Trouble” and “One Man Army” would hold the most meaning to me, as “Trouble” is a song about losing yourself in the chaos that is life. Sometimes I feel we can get to a point where we ask ourselves (how did I get here?) and how do I find my way out. “One man army” is a song about fighting, even when it feels like you have no fight left in you, even if you feel like it’s you against the world, you have to keep fighting!
The album art for GOSSIP is very different, what inspired the album art?
- I wanted the art to reflect the sound, the sound is a bit vintage in a way and I love the way it turned out.
What is the overall message on this album, as “Legends” seems to be a very positive and inspiring vibe to it.
- Yeah, I think it’s important to always seek the light at the end of the tunnel. Even in your darkest moments. It’s important for us to stay positive and to find meaning.
You have performed “Legends” on the #APMAS, with the Singing Angels choir, what made this collab come about?
- I’ve always wanted to work with a children’s choir, So we looked around Cleveland and found the Singing Angels!! They crushed it! btw, I had an amazing time performing with them at the APMAS.
Suicide has made a huge impact on the music industry recently with the deaths of Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington. How did these deaths affect you and how does SWS create more awareness for suicide awareness?
- Chester Bennington affected me in a big way, I deal with depression and anxiety and I think it’s massively important that we talk about these issues in America more openly and give people a chance to talk with someone. Also, To not ignore someone if you sense that they’re struggling and honestly just try and love one another.
You (Kellin Quinn) have a line at Never Take It Off, which is updated frequently with different jewelry, why did you choose to be affiliated with this company? What is your favorite piece of jewelry that you have put out with the company?
- Never Take It Off is an amazing company, with their jewelry, it’s a vow that we make together to not self harm and to stay connected with our fans. I couldn’t be more proud to be affiliated with the Never Take It Off brand.
You have the upcoming GOSSIP Tour this fall where you are scaling back to more intimate venues, why did SWS decide to perform this new album in smaller venues and what can fans expect from the tour?
- We wanted to do smaller shows because we wanted to be able to talk about the songs on the tour and explain why we wrote them with almost a story tellers kind of vibe to it! Definitely one you’re not going to want to miss.
Anything else you would like to tell your fans that we have not discussed within this interview? Where can fans find the band online?
- Just that I appreciate all of you with all my heart! I wouldn’t still be here if it wasn’t for all of you! Thank you for supporting myself and the guys in the band! As long as you keep showing up, we’ll keep showing up for you!
MOMENT OF MAYHEM: I’d say this whole career of mine has been Mayhem! From our first show and being so unsure, nervous, and excited. To watching our audience grow, hearing girls scream when I walked by the line for the first time, getting noticed at a mall or restaurants. To playing our first Warped Tour, and not expecting the crowds that we had and finally just still continuing to do what I love! Life is all about the climb and we’ve had one hell of a ride!
