Scorsese Produced Joker Origin Film in the Works

It has been reported that a standalone Joker film is in the works at Warner Bros. According to Deadline, WB and DC are in the early stages of putting together a Joker origin film. The film is being co-written by Todd Phillips (the Hangover) and Scott Silver (8 Mile). Phillips will also direct. Coming to help Phillips produce the film will be Martin Scorsese.

Other details in the report read that the origin story will not be a part of any other iteration and although Jared Leto is currently playing the popular villain in the DCEU, the film will have a different (and possibly younger) actor playing the role of the Joker. As for the tone, apparently the film is to be a “gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy.”

The film will be the first film launched under a new banner from WB which will aim at expanding the canon of DC properties with unique storylines and different actors playing iconic characters.

One of the best things about the Joker is that nobody really knows his origin story. There have been different origins for the clown prince of crime over the years but none being the official origin story. The most recent origin story of the character has been in Fox’s Gotham.

This all sounds interesting but will it pay off?
