At least 50 people were killed and over 200 wounded yesterday, (Sunday Oct. 1st) after a gunman opened fire from the 32nd floor of nearby Mandalay Bay Hotel during the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas on the strip as Jason Aldean was performing. It was one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history.
The gunfire interrupted singer Jason Aldean’s performance, which was the final act of this weekend’s Route 91 Harvest Festival, a three-day country music festival that was attended by tens of thousands of people. Aldean, his wife, and his crew were unharmed, he said in an Instagram post, calling the incident “beyond horrific,” continuing by saying “I still dont know what to say but wanted to let everyone know that Me and my Crew are safe. My Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved tonight. It hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone who was just coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night.”
Stephen Paddock, 64, shot at thousands of concertgoers from the 32nd floor of the nearby Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino, Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said. Authorities later killed Paddock in the hotel room. Lombardo described Paddock as the “sole aggressor” in the attack but said that officials are seeking his companion, a woman named Marilou Danley. Paddock had a home in Mesquite, Nevada, about 80 miles from Las Vegas, police there have said.
This shooting marks the third attack on a major music event within recent years. Last year, 22 people were killed at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, U.K. from a suicide bomber and in 2015, 90 people died in a suicide attack during a performance by the Eagles of Death Metal at the Bataclan theatre in Paris.
Police are asking for the public’s assistance in finding two vehicles associated with the suspect including a Hyundai Tucson Nevada [License Plate #114B40] and a Chrysler Pacifica Nevada [License Plate #79D401], the Las Vegas Police Department shared on Twitter. Anyone with any information leading to finding these vehicles should contact the Las Vegas Police Department immediately.
