The Tom Cruise led American Made was expected to take the top spot at the weekend box office, but things were far closer than anyone expected. In a close three-way race, It was able sneak past both American Made and last weekends champ Kingsman: The Golden Circle. While the final numbers may not come out until tomorrow, the estimates have the three films neck and neck…. and neck.
After two weeks number one and last week number two, It has regained the top spot once again. It has brought in an estimated $17.3 million in its fourth weekend of release. It has now earned $291,182,790 domestically, and $553.1 million.
Finishing in a close second was the Doug Limen directed American Made with $17,016,000. Tom Cruise’ last effort this year was The Mummy, which brought in $31 million in its opening weekend. Twenty years ago these weekend openings would have been solid for Cruise led vehicles, but in our current climate with massive budgets and marketing behind them, 2017 has not been kind to Mr. Cruise.
Rounding out the top five weekend box office is Flatliners, which opened with $6.7 million. The Flatliners remake has the unique honor of holding a 0% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a proud achievement as even the most unlikeable films get the occasional positive review and quite honestly gets me curious to watch. I’m sold.
