Box Office Roundup: ‘Jumanji’ Regains Top Spot

Despite the expansion of Steven Spielberg’s The Post, and the release of three new features, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was able to regain the top spot at the box office.  The Kevin Hart/Dwayne Johnson vehicle has been an absolute smash hit both domestically and internationally adding another estimated $27 million domestically during this MLK weekend.  Jumanji has now earned $283 million in the staes alone, with a worldwide cume of around $667 million.

Expanding to 2,800 theaters, Speilberg’s The Post finished second at the domestic box office earning an estimated $18 million.  The Post is lead by an all-star cast which includes Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, and Sarah Paulson among others. While not the box office results the filmmakers were expecting, The Post was able to hold off all three new wide releases.

Of the three new releases, The Commuter, Paddington 2 ($10.6 million), and Proud Mary ($10 million), only the Liam Neeson led The Commuter was able to finish in the top-five.  The Commuter brought in an estimated $13.4 million.  Comparing The Commuter to some recent Neeson opening weekends, Non-Stop opened with $28 million in 2014, Taken 3 opened with $39 million in 2015, while Run All Night opened with $11 million a couple moths after Taken 3.

Finishing fourth was Blumhouse’s Insidious: The Last Key.  The fourth film in the Insidious franchise brought in an estimated $12 million.  The Last Key currently sits around $92 million worldwide, not bad for a film with a reported budget of around $10 million.

Rounding out the top five is the Hugh Jackman led The Greatest Showman, adding $11 million to its domestic cume, which sits around $94 million.  The Last Jedi finished just outside of the top five, and currently sits around $595 million. The Force Awakens finished with $935,662,225 million domestically, while Rogue One ended its run with $532,177,324 domestically.
