20th Century Fox is shifting up it’s superhero schedule for the next couple of years, giving ‘Deadpool 2,’ ‘The New Mutants,’ and ‘Gambit‘ new release dates into 2019. The release date shift, which comes via THR, is largely due to the fact that Fox wants to avoid release overlap of their X-Men movies in some international terrotories. Here’s the rundown of the changes, along with what it all might mean:
In what is surely the most exciting piece of news here, ‘Deadpool 2‘ has moved it’s release date up from June 1, to May 18, 2018. This is good news for anyone who is looking forward to the Merc with a mouth’s return to the big screen, but it also means that ‘Deadpool 2‘ will now have even stiffer box office competition, with ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story‘ coming out just a week beforehand. This is a bold move for the studio, and ultimately a vote of confidence in the sequel by the Fox.
In addition, Fox has pushed back director Josh Boone‘s ‘The New Mutants‘ from April 13, 2018 to Feb. 22, 2019, about 10 months. THR insiders say that pushing the release date of the film was done to avoid release overlap in some international territories, where “the New Mutants’ would be in theaters the same time as ‘Deadpool 2‘. The move was not done as an indication of the film’s quality, but 10 more months are surely a long time to wait for the release of Boone’s body horror-esque take on the Marvel universe
Finally, the Channing Tatum-led ‘Gambit‘ solo film has been pushed from Feb. 14, 2019, to June 7, 2019. The film recently lost it’s director in Gore Verbinski, and this move is certainly is a reaction to that since the ‘Gambit‘ will need time to hire yet another director. But according to insiders, the studio believes that the film will faire better as a summer tentpole, as ‘Gambit‘ features a heist plot and a “heavy comedic tone”. In the meantime, we can look forward to ‘Deadpool 2‘s release in a few months!
