Pete’s 2017 Media Diary

This is the fourth year publishing the list of television, movies, and books that I read throughout the year. It’s always interesting to look back on the content you have consumed with your viewing and reading habits laid out in front of you.  It can be pretty scary for those not ready to truly look inside their own mind. For me, my biggest takeaway is always… “I need to read more books”. Looking through my 2017 media diary it’s hard to deny the fact I read zero books. I did however watch plenty of great television, and a few great movies. (Here’s to changing that in 2018).

2017 was the year in which my excitement for new television far exceeded my excitement for new movies. I continued my trend from 2016 where I felt I watched more television than movies. Television had a far larger impact on me, and sure there were some fine films scattered throughout the year, I just happened to get much more satisfaction from the plethora of television this year had to offer. Going to the movies will forever be one of my favorite activities, I just felt like too many movies I saw were simply mediocre.

There were some bright spots for me in the film world.  Some of the highlights include Good Time3 Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Brigsby Bear, Okja, and Get Out. On the television side, The Leftovers, Fargo, Mindhunter, American Vandal, Black Mirror, and too many others to count were beyond delightful.  Between Netflix and HBO the quality shows kept coming. Netflix has truly turned into something special.  The money and creative control Netflix gives the artists is something we’ve never seen before. Beyond the creative and unique output, the sheer volume of content Netflix puts out is crazy. Sure not all of it is “good”, but just about every month there was a series that was fantastic. Out of nowhere shows like Ozark or American Vandal and countless others seemly dropped out of nowhere.

Now there is a part of me that misses the old Netflix (which I first had around 2009 or so) where you could stumble across classic movies you had never seen or heard of. Now, the times have changed. It’s a different world. It’s exciting to see their original content and where it’s headed in the future. Every studio and company is starting a streaming service and Netflix continues to lead the pack.

Already as of writing this in 2018 I have seen some great movies that qualify for Awards season. As always, this time of year brings the prestige pictures which have been thoroughly entertaining. I’m excited to see what 2018 has to offer, and the fact that there is no Batman movie to disappoint me, the potential for the new year already seems to be going in the right direction. Here’s to reading more in 2018. Cheers.
