Netflix has always been a place where you can find something to watch. I was super excited to hear that Super Dark Times was going to be available on Netflix, and so I made it a point to check it out. I’m glad I did.
Super Dark Times is a 2017 thriller that does an amazing job at telling a gritty story through the eyes of teenagers in pre-day Columbine. I had heard good buzz on the net about this film, and since everything is so politically correct in today’s world, I wanted to take a chance on something that reminded me of a time when I was growing up.
Super Dark Times is the feature film debut by director Kevin Phillips, Phillips does an amazing job of setting the tone and the pace of the picture. It was as if Phillips had been directing these actors for years. Chemistry is very important to have in any feature film, and Phillips does a good job of getting the chemistry out of the predominately young cast. Anyone that has been through high school could relate to what the characters go through on a day to day basis.
The film takes place in the mid 90s in upstate New York and looks at the friendship between two best friends, Zack (Owen Campbell) and Josh (Charlie Tahan). The two friends sit around and rate girls in the yearbook and watch scrambled porn on the TV. Their friendship changes one day after school when they run across the very much disliked Daryl (Max Talisman) and his younger friend Charlie (Sawyer Barth). The four boys shop at a local store and walk around the outskirts of town.
Later in the week the boys are hanging out at Josh’s house and find some interesting things in Josh’s older brothers room, including drugs and a sword. It is the sword that changes everything. I don’t away to give too much away, but a tragic accident happens to one of the boys while they are outside playing with the sword. What happens after the accident is what fuels the film’s edge and sets Zack and Josh down two very separate paths.
For anyone that has gone through the wrangles of teenage life, you can understand it can be very confusing and sometimes intimidating. Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski deliver an excellent script, and deserve as much credit as the cast for formulating a tale like this.
I don’t want to give to much about the film, and I wish that you take my advice and check out this flick. The movie borrow’s a lot from Donnie Darko and A Clockwork Orange, and if you like those films you will definitely appreciate this one.
