(PCM) Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch is arguably one of the most beloved characters of the holiday season, so we were absolutely delighted to learn that “Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical” would be coming to Philadelphia’s Merriam Theather to ignite our holiday spirit.
The Grinch took over the city of Philadelphia on the opening night featuring many festivities including a SEPTA bus decked out in Grinch decor where they were handing out cups of hot cocoa, cookies, and Grinch hats to everyone that paid a visit. It was the perfect way to set the tone for the evening performance!
We have always been huge fans of the various variations of The Grinch story from the classic cartoon to Jim Carrey’s live-action film, so we were definitely excited to see how the story would play out in the form of a Broadway musical and it certainly did not disappoint.
“Dr. Seuss’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical” is certainly more geared towards a younger audience, however, they still managed to slip in a few “adult” humored jokes throughout the performance and we were entertained throughout the production. It is the perfect show for a holiday family outing!
The characters and production kept true to the origins of the classic Dr. Seuss style, as everything was bright, colorful and completely adorable. The Grinch, himself, was spot on in the role and we fell in love ( and felt a bit sorry) for his dog Max who was the narrator of the tale. We will definitely have the Whoville classic “Welcome Christmas” dancing through our head for days and we adored the sing along with “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch”, as it was great fun! Everyone loves a bit of audience interaction and this production provided plenty!
The costuming was delightful and we throughout the cast did a tremendous job providing us with a truly entertaining show. Just looking around and seeing the joy spread across the faces of the children, as well as, adults who were in attendance just further cemented the point that the show achieved its’ mission. We hope that “Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Chrismas! The Musical” will revisit the Philadelphia area again next year! Take that Nutcracker! The Grinch rules!

Magnificent sets (John Lee Beatty) and costumes (Robert Morgan) inspired by Dr. Seuss’ original illustrations help transport audiences to the whimsical world of Whoville, while the Music and Book of Mel Marvin and Timothy Mason breathe new life into this timeless story of the true meaning of Christmas. The 2018 production is directed by Matt August and choreographed by Bob Richard based on the original choreography by John DeLuca and originally created by 3-time Tony Award®-winning director, Jack O’Brien.
