Musician Vaeda Black Interviewed

-Tell me a bit about how your career began.
I began singing when I was little. I did alot of community theater and cabarets. Then I moved from to a different town in the middle of 3rd grade. In 4th grade I started writing creatively. I was
in a class where we the teacher really encouraged us to be creative and write. I probably wouldn’t be where I am in my writing now if I hadn’t been in that class.

After that, I discovered a poet named Sarah Kay. Her work inspired me to start writing poetry and expressing myself in that way. Over time, that poetry turned into lyrics for my songs. In the summer of 8th grade I began to teach myself how to play the piano enough to help me write music to my songs. That’s when I met my current music director James Sajeva. I’ve been working with James on the production of my songs since then. I got to the point where I realized that I wanted to get serious about my music and start releasing it. So I began working with a producer and we recorded three songs which lead to the release of my first single Face Down.

Looking back, I realize how much every little thing I grew up doing contributes to the artist I am now.

-Who inspires you as an artist?
Bishop Briggs is a big inspiration of mine. I started listening to her before she blew up, and to watch her grow and succeed is really inspiring. She also writes kickass music and is such a beautiful person, so I look up to her a lot.

-Tell me about working on this single and what inspired it.

Suicide Love is really personal to me. It actually started with a text message from my ex-boyfriend while we were just dating. I don’t remember exactly what we were talking about, but he wrote ‘that’s called suicide, love.’ Something about those two words next to each other really struck me; they’re so different. I kept thinking it would be such an interesting way to express love, passion and deep wanting, so I wrote a song around it. It is really about being so consumed with someone and by someone that you lose yourself in it. For the video I wanted to convey that visually and worked with the choreographer AC Ciulla and the director James Morano to bring the words to life.

-Who are some people you want to collaborate with?

I’d love to collaborate with someone like Billie Eilish or Donna Missal. They both have elements in their music that are in the same vein as mine, and they’re such great writers and performers. I could learn a lot from working with them.

-What’s next for you?
I have two shows coming up in January. One on January 9th at The Rockwood Music Hall in NYC and the other on the 26th at The NAMM Show in Anaheim, California. I’m so excited! It’s such a great opportunity for exposure to other musicians and people in the industry. It’s also my first time going to name and Cali in general.

I also have been working on designs for some merch with a former classmate of mine who is an awesome artist, and I’m recording a ton of new music. It’s an exciting new year already.

-Tell me a surprising, fun fact about yourself.
I can sing twinkle twinkle little star with my mouth closed… I learned that from iCarly when I was
like 8.

-What are you watching on TV these days?
I’m rewatching the office right now, but I also love American Horror Story, Big Mouth, Black
Mirror, and New Girl. I binge watch so much.

-Anything else you want to tell America?

Yes! Go check out my video on Youtube and like it! Seriously though, I want to say I am super appreciative of everyone who has supported me and my music… it really means alot.
