The Favourite Tops Women Film Critics’ Circle Awards List

[Olivia Coleman in The Favourite]

The Women Film Critics’ Circle (WFCC) has just announced its 2018 awards and it is a great place to go to select the best movies to watch this holiday season and beyond.

Topping the list is the female-driven period film The Favourite, starring Olivia Coleman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz.

Olivia Coleman was awarded best actress and best comic actress, for her portrayal of Queen Anne in an unusual love triangle between the three women.

Also awarded was the Melissa McCarthy movie Can You Ever Forgive Me, in which McCarthy plays writer/literary forger Lee Israel, based on a true story.

[Ethan Hawke for First Reformed]

The best actor award goes to Ethan Hawke for his role in the movie First Reformed. Upon hearing of the honor Hawke told the WFCC, “This is FANTASTIC! What a great list. Just the names of the prizes themselves are awesome. What an honor!”

In addition, other movies to consider include Roma, If Beale Street Could Talk, Widows, The Hate You Give and Eighth Grade.

The WFCC also gave its Lifetime Achievement Award to actress Ellen Burstyn, one of the few actresses with the Triple Crown of Acting after winning multiple Academy Awards, two Emmy Awards and a Tony Award. Her noteworthy film and TV roles include The Exorcist, The Last Picture Show, The Age of Adaline, and House of Cards.

The Best Kept Secret Award went to Gone Girls Of Cinema Pioneers: First Women Filmmakers, A Kino Lorber Collectors Edition Release.

In the early decades of cinema, some of the most innovative and celebrated filmmakers in America were women. Alice Guy-Blaché helped establish the basics of the cinematic language, while others boldly continued its development: slapstick queen Mabel Normand (who taught Charlie Chaplin the craft of directing), action star Grace Cunard, and LGBTQ icon Alla Nazimova. Unafraid of controversy, filmmakers such as Lois Weber and Dorothy Davenport Reid tackled explosive issues such as birth control, abortion, and prostitution.

This crucial chapter of film history comes alive through the presentation of a wide assortment of films, carefully curated, meticulously restored in 2K and 4K from archival sources, and presented with new musical scores.
