What Defines A Win In Paintball?

What is paintball? And just how does anyone achieve a win? Since paintball’s beginning there have been two ways paintball is played to achieve a win. There are also two primary ways the game is played. A quick overview foundation will help here.

Paintball’s Two Forms

Woodsball, speedball and all the game types within them are built on two formats. Elimination or objective. These two formats dictate how to win a paintball game.

These two forms of winning are most clearly understood and defined when playing woodsball.

The two ways to gain a win in paintball are intertwined when you get to tournament speedball level. The starting point still rests on these two formats, eliminate players or achieve an objective before your opponent.

Now that we’ve simplified it, let’s break them down. The devil is always in the details and in paintball, these two formats are convoluted by game types, lazy refs, and adjustments based on circumstances.

Elimination – Does this really need definition? Eliminate all opponents for the win. It’s a game of attrition! Kills are the term used for eliminating opponents. Woodsball came before speedball. Those first games were decided by elimination.

But wait! We mentioned tournament play! In tournament play, total elimination may not be achieved in the game time limit. This results in awarding points for players remaining and kill count becomes an objective of sorts. More on that later.

Objective – A win is achieved by completing an objective while players on both teams still have remaining players in the game. This one can be sticky when playing at any local paintball park. Every park has referees who may be sticklers for the rules or lazy in their willingness to stick to rules.

Technically if you eliminate all opposing players without achieving the objective the game is a draw. However this rule becomes closely held to when you play a casual game at a local paintball facility or among friends in an outlaw ball game. Outlaw ball will be defined later.

Conclusion

Both win types can combine point system variations. When it comes to objective based paintball games, the objectives are only limited by a game producer’s imagination. The best objectives enhance to the shooting aspect of paintball.
