‘Black Mirror’ Season 5 Episode Titles & Trailers Revealed

Black Mirror

Last week, we learned that the latest season of Black Mirror would be arriving sooner rather than later on June 5th. With an impending June release and a shortened 3-episode run, Season 5 is looking to shake the formula up. Now, Netflix has released three trailers for the new season, each of which highlights each of the upcoming episodes. Additionally, the trailers also reveal the title of each episode, which further tease the new season of Charlie Brooker’s opus. Check out the Black Mirror season 5 episode trailers below.

Smithereens

First up, we have the trailer for the episode titled “Smithereens”. Specifically, the episode follows “A cab driver with an agenda becomes the centre of attention on a day that rapidly spirals out of control.” While this episode features Andrew Scott in the lead, Damson Idris and Topher Grace also appear in supporting roles. Although this episode seems to be a complete skewering of ride share culture like Uber or Lyft, the plot looks to be headed in an interesting direction. Remember, don’t forget to tip your cabbie.

Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too

Next, we have the trailer for the second episode, which is titled “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too.” Even though Brooker has kept the series fairly self-contained in the past, this episode in particular seems to be the most metatextual that it has ever been. It follows “A lonely teenager yearns to connect with her favorite pop star — whose charmed existence isn’t quite as rosy it appears.” More than anything, this episode seems to be exploring paranoia through technology in a way that only Black Mirror could. While Miley Cyrus’ performance is clearly the draw here, the episode also stars Angourie Rice and Madison Davenport.

Striking Vipers

Up last, we have the trailer for “Striking Vipers”, which stars Anthony Mackie. As perhaps the closest thing we’ll get to a drama this season, the episode follows “Two estranged college friends reunite in later life, triggering a series of events that could alter their lives forever.” Clearly there is more at play in this story than the trailer is hinting at. But in true Black Mirror fashion, they’re keeping plot details vague and close to the vest. With that said, this episode seems to be the one that features the Street Fighter-esque scenes teased in the first trailer. In addition to Mackie, the episode also features Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Nicole Beharie, Pom Klementieff, and Ludi Lin.

Overall, season 5 of Black Mirror looks to continue the success of the boundry-defying show after Bandersnatch. While Netflix has yet to reveal the runtimes, the average runtime of an episode is between 60-75 minutes. However, the lowered episode count does give each individual story a little bit more room to breathe. Black Mirror season 5 debuts on Netflix on June 5, 2019. In the meantime, you can find the official synopsis, along with some images from the show below.

Black Mirror is an anthology series that taps into our collective unease with the modern world, with each stand-alone episode a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia leading to an unforgettable – and sometimes unsettling – conclusion. Without questioning it, technology has transformed all aspects of our lives; in every home; on every desk; in every palm – a plasma screen; a monitor; a Smartphone – a Black Mirror reflecting our 21st Century existence back at us. The series is created and written by Charlie Brooker, and executive produced by Brooker and Annabel Jones.
