Toy Story 4 is set for release on June 26th, but producer Mark Neilson recently spoke with the Hollywood Reporter to discuss the future plans for Pixar. Neilson claims that Pixar studios will shift their focus to all original films going forward. Since 2016, they have only released one original film and four sequels.
Pete Docter, the new creative chief officer since John Lasseter left, will make sure of it. The director of Monsters Inc and Up is “really looking out for the new voices and really loading up the development pool,” said Mark Nielsen, adding, “It’s all original films after this one right now.”
As it turns out, Coco is the only film which is not a sequel from a previous Pixar production. Cars 3, Finding Dory and Incredibles 2 were all sequels to successful films. The production of Pixar’s latest project, Onward, is scheduled to start in 2020. But the fans of Pixar’s older films can rest assured, some sequels will still be made. Not for the theaters, but rather for the future streaming platform Disney + which is supposed to compete with Netflix. Disney + launches in November.
