The Current War Trailer Reveals The Retooled Period Piece

The Current War

101 Studios have revealed the first trailer for The Current War, which will serve as the first release for the newly-formed studio. The film tells the story of the rivalry between Thomas Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch), George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon) and Nikola Tesla (Nicholas Hoult) for electricity dominance in the 19th century.

Directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), the film originally premiered at 2017’s Toronto Film Festival. It was met with meager reviews that criticized its excessive runtime. Unfortunately, The Current War‘s 2017 release was canceled soon thereafter when the film’s original distributor, The Weinstein Company, became mired in bankruptcy.

Eventually, the assets to The Current War were acquired by Lantern Entertainment in October 2018. Reshoots were commissioned, and the film was re-edited. The current cut — which was overseen by Gomez-Rejon and approved by Executive Producer Martin Scorsese — adds five new scenes. Despite these new scenes, however, the film’s runtime is roughly ten minutes shorter than it’s TIFF counterpart. You can read more about the long journey of the film in a fascinating article by Deadline a few months back.

In addition to Gomez-Rejon and Scorsese, The Current War also stars Katherine WaterstonTom HollandMatthew Macfadyen, and Tuppence Middleton. The film arrives in theaters on October 4th, but you can check out the new trailer below. What are your thoughts on the potential for the re-edited period drama? Let us know in the comment section!
