Paramount + News for February 2023

Here’s the latest February 2023 news related to the Paramount + (plus) streaming service.

Fargo’s Husband and Wife Team-Up Again

You have to ask yourself if they planned it this way after meeting on the set of Fargo season 3 in 2016. Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead seem locked at the hip. They teamed up again in 2019 for the 2020 film Birds of Prey, took a break to have a child in 2021, married in 2022 and now Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead are teaming up again for a Paramount+ original limited series, A Gentleman in Moscow

The Russian period piece is set in 1922 with both actors playing love interests. It’s based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Amor Towles. It’s completely fictional with no basis in past events. In it, McGregor’s character is essentially imprisoned in a hotel for years while Winstead’s character develops a relationship with him.

Maybe it’s no real stretch, or maybe their chemistry will spill onto the screen. Is it also a coincidence that Winstead scored a role on Disney+’s Ashoka series since McGregor is such an integral part? Take the odds the couple will appear again in a future Disney+ series.  For now, you’ll have to wait until late in 2023 for A Gentleman In Moscow on both Showtime and Paramount+.

Good news, Bad News for Paramount + Subscribers

In a recent earnings call, we learned that Paramount+ has been quietly doing better than its competitors. Yes, when it comes to earnings, Paramount+ is performing better than Disney+ by adding just shy of 10 million new subscribers. With 9.9 million new accounts,  Paramount + is now at a respectable 56 million customers. That’s 10 million more than Hulu (owned by Disney).  That’s the good news. The bad news is that the corporate heads assert tightening margins requires a price increase from the current Premium tier account package at $10.00 to $12.00 per month. While their lower tier Essential package is going up a dollar from $5.00 to $6.00 monthly and still includes advertising and NO Showtime.  The earnings call also revealed that management warns investors to expect some subscribers to cancel in response to the rate hike.

Jordan Peele Production Removed

At first glance, you may think Jordan Peele’s Twilight Zone has been worse than canceled as it’s been removed from Paramount+. Fear not, it’s moved to Showtime in the wake of the Paramount and Showtime merger.  While Coyote, Guilty Party, The Harper House, and No Activity have been canceled, more and more shows are thought to be moving to Showtime.
