1718 – La Nouvelle-Orleans (now New Orleans) was founded by the French Mississippi Company, under the direction of Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, on land inhabited by the Chitimacha. It was named for Philippe II, Duke of Orleans, the Regent of France. 1896 – Dr. H. H. Holmes, one of America’s first well-known serial killers, was hanged to death in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
