Comedian Allan Sidley Has a New Take on ‘Daddy Issues’ Now that He Is a Proud ‘Girl Dad’
When comedian and author Allan Sidley does a gig about Daddy Issues, the new father of a beautiful baby girl has quite a bit of material to add to his fodder.
Looking forward to his upcoming Friday, July 14 show at 8 p.m. at the Church of Satire in Hanover, PA., he is well aware that his six-month-old daughter Sunny’s arrival has upended his life in a myriad of ways.
A lot has happened since Sidley’s last show in Hanover in November 2022. “I had a baby; I lost some people close to me. Life feels very different. New problems with a fresh perspective are what makes comedy great.”
“The dad jokes are flowing through me at a rate that I can’t keep up with. I’m ‘softer’ than I’ve ever been,” admits Sidley. “I’ve been slowing down so I can enjoy the little moments with my daughter. They are so precious and exciting new things are happening all of the time.”
Sidley describes his humor as dry and highly relatable, with material including jokes and one-liners that are “edgy, provocative, corny, genius, and stupid.” He loves sprinkling in top-notch wordplay much to his audience’s delight and dismay.
Sidley is celebrating a post-Covid return to live entertainment and laughter with his national comedy gigs, including his stand-up in D.C., Northern Virginia, Richmond, Baltimore, and Hanover, with Philadelphia on the horizon.
Overcoming stage fright and writer’s block, Sidley, an expert punster, is a true inspiration to all of us who have had difficulties in our bumpy life journeys.
Today, at 33, Sidley, a native of Vienna, Virginia, is a stand-up comic, sketch comedy writer, podcaster, motivational speaker, business consultant, and the author of Daddy Issues: A Fatherless Comedian’s Original Jokes. (Released April 2021).
Sidley’s186-page book of original jokes and puns is here at the right time to help us find our funny bone. The book also points out a way to find humor in everything – not just the good or bad, but literally everything. “It is also a self-help tool,” Sidley says, “because after surviving the pandemic we still need to re-learn how to laugh.”
He also recently released his stand-up special, Daddy Issues: The Stand-up Special on YouTube, and a second book is planned as he balances family with comedy.
When it comes to the Church of Satire, Sidley says that he “had one of my best shows there. I remember laying in bed that night in absolute awe of what happened. Jim Bryan has made it such a fun place for comedians and audiences alike.”
He added that he appreciates the “intimate vibe of the club. People come to laugh and have a great time. Jim is just really an authentic guy; you see what he’s doing and done with the club you can’t help but be inspired, he said. “Jim brings in national talent as well as gives a platform for local comedians to grow. Everyone works hard, making it a great community to be a part of.”
