Bradley Cooper Gave An Emmy Award Winning Performance On The Season Four Opener Of ‘The Righteous Gemstones’

The season 4 premiere of The Righteous Gemstones premiered last night on HBO MAX after an all-new episode of The White Lotus. Fans must have been checking to see if they were watching the right show, as the premiere looked back in time.

The Danny McBride-created show traveled back to 1862 with none of the series’ cast in it. The 43-minute season opener, Prelude, plays like a Civil War movie—with a lot of graphic violence included—with a surprise leading man, Bradley Cooper, playing a Gemstone ancestor.

Cooper carries the entire episode, which chronicles his character’s journey from a scheming, unscrupulous crook who would do anything for money—including killing people, pretending to be a pastor, and joining a Confederate unit as a Chaplain—to redemption. Danny McBride directed the episode and helped write the script.

‘The Righteous Gemstones’ follows the second generation of a grand televangelist tradition; the world-famous Gemstone family is living proof that worship pays dividends in all sizes. Patriarch Eli, the man most responsible for the tremendous success of the family’s megachurch, is mourning over his wife’s loss. Jesse, the eldest of the three grown Gemstone siblings, looks to follow in his father’s footsteps but finds his past sins jeopardizing the family ministry.

The Righteous Gemstones premiered all the way back in the summer of 2019. The series is ending after this season. Check out the trailer below for a look at this final season.
