In the vibrant world of Apple TV+’s new animated series BE@RBRICK, music isn’t just background noise—it’s a transformative force. At the helm of this sonic journey is none other than legendary producer Timbaland, who serves as the show’s Executive Music Producer.
We had a chance to catch up with Timbaland to shed some insight into his work on the new series, how music continues to speak to him and just what he may look like as a “BE@RBRICK” himself!
1. What attracted you to working on the BE@RBRICK series?
“The creativity, man. BE@RBRICK is about breaking boundaries, about art, music, and storytelling coming together. That’s exactly what I do in music, so it felt like the perfect fit.”
2. What challenges did you face with creating the music for the series? Did you have a lot of creative freedom with the songs?
“The challenge was making sure every track fit the world we were building. But I had full creative freedom, which is the best way to work. I got to experiment with sounds and push the limits to make something new.”
3. I love the overall message of the series about creating your own destiny. How important is that for young viewers?
“It’s everything. Kids need to see that they don’t have to fit into a box—they can paint their own path. That’s what this show is about, and that’s what I’ve always stood for.”
4. Was there anything you were surprised to learn about yourself as an artist when creating music for the BE@RBRICK series?
“Yeah, I realized how much I love storytelling through music. I mean, I’ve always done it, but working on an animated series showed me a whole new way to bring emotions to life through sound.”
5. In what ways has music continued to speak to you as an artist?
“Music is universal, man. It don’t matter where you’re from or what language you speak— you feel it. That’s why I do what I do. It connects people in a way nothing else can.”
6. Have you ever collected BE@RBRICKS? If you could design your own BE@RBRICK, what would it look like?
“I got a few, yeah! If I made my own, it would be all about rhythm. Maybe something with sound waves on it, something that visually represents music in motion.”
7. What do you hope that viewers take away from the series and the music?
“I want them to feel inspired. I want them to walk away knowing they can create, that they can tell their own story and be their own artist, whatever that means to them.”
Based on the iconic BE@RBRICK figures from MEDICOM TOY, the 13-episode series, produced and animated by DreamWorks Animation and Dentsu Inc., features upbeat, original songs and aims to empower kids and families to embrace their true selves through the universal language of music.
“BE@RBRICK” follows Jasmine Finch and her bandmates as they pursue their dreams and inspire others to do the same. But it won’t be easy to do when living in a world where everyone’s role is chosen for them and where the painted-on look you receive when you graduate from high school determines who you’ll be for the rest of your life. Jasmine realizes that in order for her world to change, she and her friends will have to make it happen themselves.
The music-driven series, told through CG animation, is developed by Daytime Emmy Award nominee Meghan McCarthy (“My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic,” “Centaurworld”), who also serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Alex Almaguer (“TrollsTopia”) is the supervising producer, with Taylor Orci (“Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts”) as story editor, and Athena Hofmann (“Amateur”) as line producer. The voice cast brings the characters to life with Brianna Bryan as Jasmine, Skyla I’Lece as Holly, Isaiah Crews as Nick, Alison Jaye as Ada, and Noah Bentley as Klaus.
In addition to its vibrant storytelling, the series is enhanced by the musical talents of four-time Grammy Award-winning producer Timbaland, who serves as executive music producer, with an original score by Jina Hyojin An (“XO, Kitty”) and Shirley Song (“Exploding Kittens”).
