It’s Oscar season…how do you feel about this year’s list of nominees (and snubs). We were definitely surprised to see that award-darling “Challengers” was notably missing, as well as nods to Nicole Kidman for “Babygirl”, Angelina Jolie for “Maria” and Stanley Tucci for “The Conclave.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the nominations for the 97th Academy Awards, scheduled for March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Leading the pack is Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” with 13 nominations, marking a historic achievement for a non-English-language film.
“Emilia Pérez” has garnered nods in major categories, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, who becomes the first openly transgender performer nominated in this category. Zoe Saldaña also received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film.
Following closely are “The Brutalist” and “Wicked,” each securing 10 nominations. “Wicked,” the cinematic adaptation of the beloved musical, earned acting nominations for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Erivo’s nomination is particularly noteworthy as she becomes the first out queer Black performer nominated for Best Actress.
In the Best Actor category, Timothée Chalamet received a nomination for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown.” Colman Domingo was also recognized for his performance in “Sing Sing,” positioning him as a potential first out gay Black man to win an acting Oscar.
The Best Picture nominees are:
“Anora”
“The Brutalist”
“Conclave”
“Dune: Part Two”
“Emilia Pérez”
“Wicked”
The ceremony will be hosted by Conan O’Brien and broadcast live on ABC. This year’s nominations highlight a significant moment for diversity and representation in Hollywood, with several historic firsts and a wide array of films and talents being recognized.
