(PCM) The music world is mourning another loss with the recent passing of Phil Everly, one half of the famed music duo The Everly Brothers at the age of 74.
Everly passed away on Friday, January 3rd, 2013 in the city of Burbank, CA and the cause of death is being reported as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which was confirmed by Everly’s wife Patti.
Patti went on to say that Everly fought long and hard against the disease for many years and he was afflicted with COPD due to a lifetime of smoking.
The Everly Brothers, Don and Phil, released their self-titled debut album back in 1958 and then went on to chart over 31 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, with 12 top ten hits. Some of their best known songs include “Bye Bye Love”, “All I Have To Do Is Dream”, “Wake Up Little Susie”, “Bird Dog”, and “Problems”.
Billboard recently ranked The Everly Brothers as the 66th biggest act in the 55 year history of the Hot 100 chart. In the 70′s both brothers made attempts at solo careers, with Phil finding success in the U.K. with the song “She Means Nothing To Me”.
The duo were among the first artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame’s inaugural class back in 1986 and then became part of the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2001.
Phil Everly is survived by his older brother Don Everly who is 76, his wife Patti, two sons, and two granddaughters. Our sincere condolences go out to Phil’s family and friends during this difficult time.
