(PCM) State legislators in Hawaii are diligently working on the proposed “Bruno Mars Act” which will assist in resolving the issue of online ticket brokers and scalpers selling tickets at outrageously inflated prices and snagging all the seats to a show before fans even have a chance to purchase them from the box office.
The situation came to head in Hawaii when Bruno Mars announced several shows in Honolulu, which completely sold-out in less than three hours. This may appear to be awesome for the performer, but sources claim that only a measly six percent of the actual tickets sold were purchased by individual fans. What this means is that ninety-four percent of the tickets sold were purchased by online ticket scalpers and brokers, who hope to make a major profit re-selling those tickets at highly inflated prices.
Many fans, who showed up at the box office hoping to purchase tickets were forced to walk-away empty handed, which according to Hawaii state legislators is just wrong. Hawaii State Senate President Donna Mercado Kim had the following comments about the unfortunate situation: “Anyone who takes the time to show up in person should have the opportunity to purchase tickets for at least the first two days before opening up to online sales. It’s unfortunate that out-of-state ticket brokers and scalpers will resell these concert tickets back to local residents for an enormous profit.”
The “Bruno Mars Act”, if passed, will allow fans the opportunity to purchase tickets for approximately forty eight hours before online sales will begin. The bill will also serve as a blocker to prohibit the use of security software designed by brokers and scalpers to bypass online barriers put in place to stop bulk ticket purchases.
We think that Hawaii is totally on the right path for battling these online ticket brokers and scalpers and it is definitely time that “real” fans actually receive more than a six percent chance of getting tickets to check out their favorite performer. We can hope that more states will begin to follow suit and that those scalpers and brokers will be put out of business for good.
