Stephen Colbert Under Fire For Racially Insensitive Tweet

Stephen-Colbert1(PCM) Comedian and host of Comedy Central’s “The Stephen Colbert Show” is receiving quite a bit of backlash following a tweet (which has since been deleted) that was posted to the show’s Twitter account.

Whoever runs the show’s Twitter account (because apparently it is not Colbert himself) posted a line of dialogue that Colbert had said during Wednesday night’s episode that was mocking Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder’s reaction to the recent public outcry for him to change the name of his NFL team. Snyder claims he is extending an olive branch to those who are offended by the name by starting an organization to assist Native Americans. It is his purposed name for the organization,  The Washington Redskins Original Americans Foundation, that caused Colbert to call him out.

We have posted the text from “The Colbert Shows” deleted tweet below:

“I am willing to show #Asian community I care by introducing the Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation for Sensitivity to Orientals or Whatever”

The line was from dialogue on the show and was also a reference to a bit that Colbert performed back in 2005 for the TV show where he was caught performing a racist Chinese impersonation.

The Asian-American community was outraged by the insensitive tweet and immediately took to their social media accounts to express outrage and demand apology, accompanied by the hash tag #CancelColbert

The Colbert Report Twitter account tried to run some damage control by admitting that Stephen Colbert himself or the show is not involved or in control of the Twitter account, claiming it is a Comedy Central account.

It is still a bit hard to believe that co-creator and executive producer for “The Colbert Report” that Stephen would have no say so at all in the social media aspect of the show, but they are sticking to that story.

Stephen Colbert himself, in his usual joking manner, weighed in on the Twitter battle, but posting the following tweet from his personal account:
