Actress and Civil Rights Activist Ruby Dee Dead At Age 91

(PCM) Academy-award nominated actress and civil rights activist Rudy Dee has passed away at the age of 91. According to her daughter, Dee passed away in her home in New Rochelle, NY.

Dee began her acting career in the 1940′s, however she began to receive national attention for her role in “The Jackie Robinson Story” which was released in 1950. Dee was nominated for an Oscar for her role in the 2007 film “American Gangster” and throughout her extensive career has also earned both an Emmy and a Grammy.

Along with her late husband Ossie Davis, Dee was a strong supporter of the civil rights movement. She was able to call both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcom X friends and won a Fredick Douglass Award in 1970 for the National Urban League.
